What is the real name of the Quartz stone?
The name “Quartz” comes from the German word “quartz”(which probably originated in Slavic, cf. Czech tvrdý (“hard”), Polish twardy (“hard”), Serbian and Croatian tvrd (“hard”), but, unfortunately, the scientific origin of its etymology is unclear. Also other names of this mineral and its variants: Mexican diamond, Tamerlane stone, arrows of Cupid and Venus hair.
The Ancient Greeks referred to quartz as κρύσταλλος (krustallos) derived from the Ancient Greek κρύος (kruos) meaning “icy cold”, because some philosophers (including Theophrastus) apparently believed the mineral to be a form of supercooled ice. Hence today, the term rock crystal (or rhinestone) people sometimes use as an alternative name for the purest form of quartz.
Quartz is the most common material that we can identify as the mystical substance maban in Australian Aboriginal mythology.
