The filigree is one of the oldest and most spectacular jewelry techniques in the world. It is admirable the work that must be dedicated to create each of these pieces and today I must mention that the art of filigree is more present than ever in the Jewelery Talent Contest 2018. One of the oldest jewelry techniques, today could be considered as outdated and linked to simple remakes of traditional pieces, but in the right hands can be of a magical beauty.
Patricia Benfield, founder of the brand that bears her name, tells us that, as it was done 400 years ago, she is struggling to maintain this beautiful art without molds or machines, with a perfect balance between filigree and precious and semi precious stones. crimped by hand.
Her passion for this technique has led her to preach to maintain the exact methods of filigree as was done in antiquity. All his pieces are made by hand and together with other masters in bone carving and painters create unique and unrepeatable contemporary fusions.
This brand is native to the cradle of filigree in Mexico: Oaxaca. Among the materials used is the .925 silver rolled in gold, and each piece is unique and unrepeatable delivered with a certificate of authenticity and a folio number along with the description of the piece.
The filigree of Oaxaca has the greatest cultural mix and richness. Due to its ethnic, mystical and biological diversity, its identity remains in its millenary customs. These are inherited by our famous Mixtec goldsmiths transforming gold and silver into unique creations.
Since the discovery of Tomb 7 in Monte Albán, the discovery of several relics and artifacts showed a vision of art and the sophistication of the techniques of the Mixtec goldsmiths who have given the State of Oaxaca its own style. Handmade with sacred emblems and designs molded into necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings that have seduced the world.
Their jewels are exposed in artistic galleries because they are considered pieces of art.
They also use crystals, precious and semi-precious stones such as quartz, pearls, quarry, bone, etc. The period of time it takes to finish depends on its complexity and size, since a bracelet requires 2 days of work, while the medium pieces take 1 day and the smallest 4 or 5 hours to then laminate in gold.
Patricia is inspired by life itself, the place where it resides, everything that surrounds it, its dreams, but above all, it is inspired by how a jewel can enhance beauty and power in a woman.
They are dream pieces in works of art, valued for their design, originality, elegance and beauty that can only be worn by women who love beauty and authenticity in a contemporary Mexican design. These pieces speak for themselves of power, elegance and distinction.“
Her passion for jewelry was born since Patricia was very small. She tells me that she made necklaces, earrings and bracelets with thread, paper, or any other material that he could find and had within reach. Patricia has a degree in Plastic Arts and decided to design filigree because it is the way she found to express herself in all aspects of her life and it is her passion.
She tries to combine her two passions in the design of life, family and jewelry, the study of precious stones and fine gems.
“I love my work, fusing the stones with the filigree is wonderful when you find the balance to do it, it’s magical.”
