In general, that’s because I decided to share with you today the history of this stone!
What is the jade stone?
Jade stone is a mineral similar to nephritis, but it has different composition. Jade is a silicate of sodium and aluminum, but it is harder than nephritis. It has the same color, but it is quite rarer. In ancient times people believed that jade stone had an impact on whether and affected its changes.
This stone usually has green or white coloring of different shades (from light green to emerald). However, there are also red, purple, blue, yellow, black and brown patterns. Jade stone casts a glass luster. This gem can be both transparent and non-transparent.
On the world market, jade stone can be divided into three main classes:
1. “Imperial” – emerald-green translucent stone (occurs with veins and segregation up to 2 – 5 cm), jewelers use it as a gemstone.
2. “Commercial” – green and gray opaque stone (with thin veins and small patches of translucent bright green color), jewelers mainly use it as a decorative ornamental stone, raw material and selectively as a gemstone.
3. “Utilities” – green and gray opaque stone (with non-uniform coloration), jewelers regard it as an ornamental stone.
Other colors, like “Olmec blue” jade, characterize by its deep blue-green, translucent hue with white flecking, are also becoming more highly valued because of its unique beauty and historical use by the Mesoamerican Olmec and also in Costa Rica. However, we discovered this variety only recently and, unfortunately, native Guatemalans exploited it minimally. It is thus difficult to obtain and as yet too rare and little known to attain great value as a gemstone.
When purchasing jade, jewelers determine quality by the degree of translucency, cleanness of color and purity of color. Occasionally, other minerals such as serpentine or quartz have the same sold as jade but the difference is in cleavage and hardness.
Getting the name
Jade got its name from the Greek word “ischias” (means sore in hips) or from the Spanish “izada” (means hoisted). In ancient times the word “jade” combined nephrite and jadeite and revered it as the sacred stone.
People believed it can cure kidney stones if they rub it against the side of the afflicted person’s body. The Latin version of the name, lapis nephritis, is the origin of the term nephrite, which is also a variety of jade.
To its final name jade stone is obliged to the French mineralogist A. Demura, who in 1836 found out that the well-known at the times jade presented two different minerals: jadeite and nephrite.
