90’s is the era when the variety of clothing and accessories was not yet so huge, online stores did not exist, and the most original fashion finds were the result of a long hike in a variety of shops – from the second-hand and vintage boutiques to army or rocker shops, where the most unusual treasures were found. I have promised to tell you about this era a long time ago, though, because its fashion trends are returning for today! You can read more about this in my previous post about Choker style for Summer 2017. Aww, I am so inspired!
1. Chokers’ birth
When a real fashionista hears about 90s jewelry, “choker” is always the first thing that comes in her head. Only lazy fashionista of the 90s decade did not wear the wired choker jewelry! Click To Tweet Of course, price of such adornment was quite low, so every schoolgirl could afford to decorate her look with such a fashionable necklace. By the end of this decade, such cheap and simple enough jewelry items received the status of bad taste. Only now they become the most unusual ones and even enter into the category of evening jewelry. They appear in every jewelry casket – from the child’s to the celebrities’.
So, during 90s the punk rock world rapidly turned into a disco-pop culture. Click To Tweet Rough leather accessories have become lightweight and stylish around-the-neck jewelry for young pop divas. Designers made chokers from synthetic fabrics of acid colors, with metal pendants, beaded and others. But despite all os this, a tattoo-choker of a black fishing line was especially cool for that times.
2. Chains everywhere!
Necklace in the form of a chain also came to us from the era of the 90s jewelry and fashion. And there is nothing surprising, because such decorative trends are the result of punk and grunge cultures influence. Just like now, during 90s such necklaces were worn with the most accurate and monochrome clothes. So that, purpose of this necklace was to spoil too pedantic and conservative look. That is why the color of jewelry material should have looked like an aged silver. Still, the 90's jewelry is a total vintage. Click To Tweet Also, fashionistas and stylists used quite long necklaces in a form of a chain as an unusual and extravagant belts for trouser suits.
3. Montana watch
Saved from Root Nation
Montana watch was the object of lust of all the 90's fashionistas. Click To Tweet But electronic watches were quite expensive at that times, so Chinese analogues simply filled the fashion world of 90s decade. Such watches appeared on hands and in the jewelry caskets of almost every person, and Montana watch owner was considered the most fashionable one. During our decade you can often find such watches in a golden color, but in those days the most popular finish was in the silver shade. In addition, such an accessory required the total solitude, except the small earrings-studs could make a proper company.
4. Unisex jewelry
Fashionistas and 90’s jewelry lovers often looked for jewelry with rivets, chains or mysterious symbols in men’s jewelry collections, because there usually could be found stylish, inexpensive and moderately alternative copies. The most popular options that girls selected from the men’s collections were leather braided bracelets and silver rings with black stones. By the way, I hasten to remind you that such men’s bracelets are in fashion again. I wrote about it here – Fashion bracelets Spring 2017.
5. Bright plastic
Saved from CLIQUEY PIZZA 2
Bright plastic jewelry was available to everyone. Thanks to their low price they were bought and worn in excess. In a combination with bright makeup plastic jewelry resembled a theatrical performance, but it was very fashionable. If the school had a girl, who wore massive plastic earrings and a denim jacket – she was considered the most fashionable, being the object of all the bad guys in school passion. But this trend was clearly borrowed from the past decade. Fashionistas believed that these accessories can make them younger and even relieve of some complexes.

Flashy colors and bold prints were the hallmark of the 90s jewelry and fashion. Click To Tweet People did not think a lot about the combination of colors according to some special rules. The only one and the main fashion rule was rainbow everywhere: the more colors in one thing – the better. Signed prints of the 90s jewelry were colored palms of acid colors, abstract patterns and crazy drawings – all these ornaments you could find among 90s fashion. Such examples usually appeared on wide chokers and bracelets, or large earrings. Such adornments were naturally plastic or gold-plated and appeared mostly in teenage looks.
6. Grunge pin-earrings
A pin-earring also appeared thanks to punks. By the way, a trend of different earrings or a single earring was born in the very 90s. After all, such a pin should be very large and it should be combined with a number of studs or ring-earrings, if the girl had pierced ears at different locations. This earring was one of the cheapest options to keep up with fashion, because designers have not yet begun to outplay this form of 90s jewelry, but the trend was already popular at all. Therefore, an ordinary sewing pin was one of the main accessories among fashionable 90s jewelry.
7. Statement necklace
Now the jewelry item, which we usually call the statement necklace, is a heavy baroque necklace with stones. But than under this definition there were also accessories that were collected from the design feed in the spirit of “all the best at once”. And there was not even a question about any harmonious form – it is an eclectic adornment – story with lots of independent details, each of which has its own meaning. Yes, yes, style of modern Pandora or Prada jewelry collections appeared even then, in the collections of 90s jewelry.
8. Gold-plated 90s
During 90s era fashionistas really didn’t know when to stop. So at once they could wear big necklaces, earrings of the cherry size and wide bracelets. If teenagers still gravitated toward simple adornments such as openwork elastic laces, collars with hearts, “Peace” pendants and color-changing rings, adult girls wore massive gold-plated jewelry: necklaces with shells, earrings-rings, wide chains and thin bracelets in several rows. So if you want to repeat the fashion of this era – do not be afraid to wear golden 90s jewelry.
9. Bracelets of friendship
Saved from Bangle and Bracelets
Bracelets of friendship appeared in the era of the 90s jewelry and probably remained forever in the teenage fashion. After all, even in my childhood, which was in 2000, I wove such adornments. Someone used for this jewelry pieces sewing threads and someone even added beads. These bright handmade bracelets were worn in an amount of at least five pieces on each hand. Multicolored adornments “worked” as reminders of the most pleasant moments: they were exchanged between friends, presented to each other, sometimes sold and always carefully stored. Probably, this is my favorite item example among 90s jewelry fashion.
But this is not the only kind of friendship 90s jewelry. Bracelets and even pendants with the broken heart symbol and the inscription like “Friends Forever” or “Love Forever” were also very popular. Indeed, what will symbolize the eternal friendship better than the heart shape, cruelly straightened in the jewelry item? It is a real symbol of our care about each other. It is an almost faultless reasoning.
10. Eyewear cord
Glasses were a very important accessory of the 90s jewelry era. And there were not just sunglasses, but the eye doctor prescribed ones. The main detail was a cord on these glasses – it became a real work of art. Usually it has been in a form of a chain or bright-colored cord. 90s decade “hipsters” were the very fashionistas, who wore such eyewear. They were the most fashionable and the most exposed to trends people, who, by the way, had turned this accessory into a real kitsch just in the ten years. And what do you think about this adornment, how soon will it return to fashion again?
Today 90s jewelry and fashion became the most trendy, it is repeated both by young girls and older ladies.
So, why everyone have picked up a return to the 90s style? Because it is a nostalgia for a serene youth and for the happy times. This is a nostalgia for freedom, which was so close to the grunge style. It is the memory of the punk culture audacity. That was a such simple-minded era, which fashion was taken up by teenagers so vehemently. 90s is a teenage style, it is a spirit of youth, freshness and dreaminess. And so that it will always come back to the podium.
